The Hague School offers dynamic summer programming to students from grades 7 through 12 to keep students engaged and connected over the summer break. Offerings range from academic preparation and review sessions to creative workshops focused on student enrichment. Click a selection below to learn more about what’s available in 2024.

Theater Camp: Write and Produce a Play
Date and Times: Mon - Fri, June 10 - 21st
Open to rising 7th and up.
In this fun-filled two-week camp, students will collaborate to write and then perform and produce an original play. In the first week, students will collaborate to develop a script which they will rehearse, produce, and stage in the second week, performing it on the final date for family and friends. Throughout the camp, students will get coaching and training through exercises in creative writing, acting, public speaking, stage management, and set design. This camp will be led by Brandon McCrary from the Ghent Montessori School.
Price: $450 for the two weeks.

Exploring an Urban Watershed
Time & Date: June 17th - June 21st, 9 am - 12:00pm.
Open to rising 8th - 12th graders.
In this one-week course, students will study hydrologic maps and canoe through sections of the Elizabeth River collecting data from small tributaries that feed the river and the Chesapeake Bay. Participants will apply scientific skills in the field, studying organisms that are indicator species of water quality to determine the health of aquatic ecosystems within this urban landscape. During the week students will learn how to become effective environmental stewards by planting native vegetation that provides habitat and filters water and discussing strategies to improve the health of this watershed.

Kitchen Skills & Culinary Thrills
Time & Dates: June 17th - June 21st, 10 am - 1 pm
Open to rising 8-12th graders.
This week-long cooking course offers a unique opportunity for kids from grades 8 - 12 to learn essential culinary skills while having a blast with their peers. Students will develop a love for cooking and explore new flavors and ingredients in a safe, supportive environment. Our expert chef, Ms. M.J., will teach students how to prepare a variety of delicious meals from scratch and the importance of kitchen safety and hygiene. But these sessions are more than just cooking lessons. Students will also have the chance to participate in team-building activities, learn about nutrition and sustainability, and gain valuable life skills such as problem-solving, communication, and creativity. Plus, our budding chefs will get to taste everything they make! You'll leave our camp with a sense of accomplishment, new friendships, and a newfound appreciation for the art of cooking.

Summer of Cinema
Time & Dates: June 24th - June 28th, 9am-12pm.
Open to rising 7th - 11th graders.
Students will watch a film each day on the big screen in our school's auditorium, enjoying popcorn and other movie theater snacks. After the film, students will engage in a discussion about the film led by filmmaker Matt Friedman, who teaches IB Film at The Hague School. These free-form conversations will introduce students to basic filmmaking techniques and terminology and will give them a vocabulary for conducting visual analysis, a skill that can be applied to literature and art as well as visual and written argument. A wonderful refresher or introduction to Harkness and discussion-based learning for students interested in practicing these skills over the summer.

College Admissions Essay Bootcamp (Virtual)
Times & Dates: Meets virtually on Tuesdays: July 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th and Aug 6th. 9:30 am -11:30 am
Open to rising 11-12th graders.
Summer is the perfect time to craft and revise your college admissions essay. Whether you’ve started a draft or can’t decide on a topic, this boot camp will help you move your college application essay to the next stage. A former college instructor who has helped hundreds of students gain acceptance to top-tier colleges, Ms. Boncal will guide you toward an essay that makes a strong impression and expresses your unique voice. By studying successful examples, learning about common pitfalls, playing with prompts, and getting feedback on drafts, students will start the school year off with a strong draft and a clear sense of where they’re headed.

Build a Band Camp
Time & Dates: July 8th - July 12th, 9 am - 12 pm.
Open to rising 8-12th graders.
Led by singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Nate Sacks, students will collaborate to build a short show setlist, learn the songs, and perform for friends and family on the final day of camp. Students should have some experience playing an instrument. Guitarists and keyboardists should bring equipment. We will provide drums and microphones set up for singers.

Algebra Review & Refresh
Time & Dates: July 15th - July 19th 9 am - 12 pm.
Open to students who have completed Algebra I, but also useful for students who have completed Algebra II.
This one-week Algebra review course will help students keep their math skills fresh over the summer in a relaxed, group-focused environment. This course is ideal for any student who has already passed Algebra 1 and offers preparation for math and science courses in the years to come.

Introduction to Weaving (for teens and adults)
Times & Dates: Thursdays July 18th, July 25th, August 1st, and August 8th, 5 pm - 8 pm
Open to ages 15 - adults.
This class will explore floor looms and is designed for those who are new to weaving and those with some experience. Students learn to wind a warp, set up a loom, and weave a sampler using plain weave and twill. Weaving vocabulary, loom structure and function, and basic draft reading are covered, as are selecting yarns and determining quantities needed for a project. The class will conclude with cutting off and finishing the edges of your weaving. Weaving time will be supplemented with lectures and examples.

Study of the Short Story
Times and dates: July 22nd - 26th, 9 am - 12 pm.
Students will read and discuss some of the most famous short stories in literature, unpacking the tricks and strategies writers use to build effective scenes through dialogue, description, plot, and character. Along the way, participants will engage in creative writing, drawing upon their study of the masters to develop their own original short stories.

Exploring French Cuisine
Time & Dates: July 29th - Aug 2nd, 10 am - 1 pm
Open to rising 8-12th graders.
Explore the world of French cuisine! In this camp, students will prepare simple staple French recipes enjoyed by people from France regularly. Traditional French cuisine differs from one region to the next, however, these "plats traditionnels" are appreciated throughout France. Students will first discuss French cuisine (in French) and its related vocabulary and then will cook lunch on site. Each day includes a meal and dessert (entrée, plat, et dessert). Students will also make and enjoy French music and practice their French language skills!
