International Baccalaureate
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IB) was developed during the 1960s to serve as the bases for an internationally transferable high school diploma. Recognized in over 150 countries, the IB has as its centerpiece a course called Theory of Knowledge, which has students interrogate the question, “How do we know what we know?” 11th and 12th graders complete the requirements for an IB diploma by passing exams in 6 core content areas and writing an extended essay that is evaluated by international assessors.
No other independent high school in Hampton Roads offers the IB Diploma Programme.
At The Hague School, the IB curriculum is combined with the Harkness conference method of instruction, making it unique in the Mid-Atlantic region and one of only a few worldwide. Harkness learning aligns with the IB’s aims of creating learners who strive to be: Inquirers, Knowledgeable, Thinkers, Communicators, Principled, Open-Minded, Caring, Risk-Takers, Balanced, & Reflective. We believe these attributes, and others like them, can help individuals and groups become responsible members of local, national, and global communities.
